Centipede Grass

I found this interesting video about Centipede grasses and thought I would share if with you and your search.

I had know idea that Centipede grass was so hardy in my East Texas area since most people in Texas want a San Agustine lawn, but that grass grows very fast and requires a lot of water and maintenance.

Centipede grass could be a very good alternative for you if you live in the lower South, or East Southern coast area.

Its relatively cheap and readily available in just about all large feed stores and in Home Depot and of course online.

Let me know if you use Centipede seed and if would you like to send me your pictures I would love to post them on this site. I will be working on adding more content to this site and more pictures and videos so feel free to help me.

Centipede Grass Seed

What are the benefits of Centipede Grass Seed over a more common Bermuda Grass Seed?

Centipede grass is native to China and Parts of Southeast Asia and was brought to the US in 1916. It grows slow and has short stems growing upward.  it resembles the insect centipede and so that is what it is called.

It prefers sandy acidic like soils in most Southern states.

Grows only about 3-5 inches so it requires minimal mowing and maintenance.

Does fairly well in cold climates of the Southern USA. During a light freeze it will turn brown but will recover with no problems.
